Why We Love This Stay
🏨 The hotel itself This is not your standard city break accommodation. Pensao Amor Madam’s Lodge opened in 2023 inside a building that served as one of Lisbon’s most famous brothels, frequented by sailors, writers, artists, and the city’s bohemian crowd for decades. The 22 rooms are each named after former residents, with personal objects, murals, and stories built into the design throughout. The reception looks like the anteroom of a luxury brothel. There is nothing else like it in Portugal.
🎨 The design and atmosphere The building spans seven floors and features original frescoes on the ceilings, walls covered in mirrors and vintage artwork, and room-by-room theming that is genuinely surprising. Award-winning illustrator Nuno Saraiva designed the contemporary murals that run through the staircase connecting the hotel to the bar and cultural space below. Every corner has a story.
🍽️ Time Out Market on the doorstep One of the world’s best food markets is a five-minute walk away. Time Out Market Lisboa brings together Lisbon’s top chefs and restaurants under one roof, making it ideal for a first night in the city when you want to try everything without having to choose.
🏙️ The neighbourhood Cais do Sodre has gone from one of Lisbon’s seedier waterfront areas to its most vibrant. Pink Street is lined with bars, and the surrounding neighbourhood connects you to Chiado, Baixa, and the riverfront all on foot. It is the best-located part of the city for nightlife and food combined.
🌞 July weather Lisbon in mid-July means consistent sunshine, temperatures around 28 to 32 degrees, and long warm evenings perfect for sitting outside. It is one of the sunniest capitals in Europe and the light in summer is something else.
🚋 A city built for exploring Alfama, the Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery, the Santa Justa Lift, Miradouros at every turn. Lisbon rewards slow walking and accidental discovery. The hotel is perfectly placed to reach all of it, with metro and bus connections within minutes.

Your Stay
Pensao Amor Madam’s Lodge is one of the most distinctive places to stay in Lisbon. Situated at 38 Rua Nova do Carvalho on Pink Street in the Cais do Sodre district, the hotel opened in mid-2023 as an extension of the iconic Pensao Amor bar below, which has been one of the city’s most loved cultural spaces since 2011.
The building was a working brothel for much of the 20th century, frequented by sailors arriving into the nearby port and by the writers, fado singers, and bohemian figures who made this neighbourhood what it was. Rather than erase that history, the owners leaned into it. Each of the 22 rooms is named after a former resident, with personal objects, artwork, and stories woven into the design throughout the building. Nuno Saraiva, one of Portugal’s best-known illustrators, created the murals that run through the connecting staircase.
Rooms feature air conditioning, private bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free WiFi. The bar downstairs hosts live music, burlesque shows, and events most nights of the week, giving the hotel an energy that no standard property can match. Rossio Square is a 12-minute walk. Commerce Square is 8 minutes away. Cais do Sodre metro station is practically next door.
